1965-8 Lost in Space (TV)
During the United States manned mission of a colonial family to
our nearest star Alpha Centuari, a foreign spy, Dr. Zachary Smith, sabotages the Robot; a mobile environmental servant. The
orders to the Robot are to destroy the Jupiter II spacecraft after 8 hours into the flight and the family and pilot within.
Unable to exit the departing spacecraft in time, Smith finds himself an "Accidental Stowaway." With a weight shift and a
changed flight profile, the Jupiter II heads to a meteor shower and is almost destroyed. The Robot, still under orders to
destroy the ship, begins to wreak havoc on the control systems and is stopped just in time. But with severely damaged systems
and without guidance, the Jupiter II is now Lost in Space... The music from Lost in Space was actually performed with the
aid of an electro-theremin.
nFun Facts:
Originally titled "Space Family Robinson", but changed as CBS was concerned that the
title was too close to the title of the Disney film Swiss Family Robinson (1960).
The space ship was originally named
"Gemini XII", but was changed to avoid confusion with the then-current NASA program.
The props used in this show,
(such as the computers and guns) also were used in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1964), "Time Tunnel, The" (1966), "Land
of the Giants" (1968), and "Batman" (1966).
