An utterly absorbing, and brilliantly executed recording from the greatest theremin player of all time... If you buy
no other theremin CD, buy this one!
Clara Rockmore reached a level of artistry on
the theremin that no-one else has even come close to. If you're seriously interested in the theremin, then this is the CD
for you. Rockmore's breath of feeling and sense of expression somehow complements the sound of the theremin so well, she
just seems to mold the air within her fingertips. Clara Rockmore takes a number of 'standards' from the violin repertoire
and gracefully reinterprets them.
Performers: Clara Rockmore, (theremin), and Nadia
Reisenberg (piano). Delos - #1014 Audio CD

Music From the Ether:Theremin Featuring music from Percy Grainger, Joseph Schillinger, and compositions by Lydia Kavina herself.

Lydia Kavina might very well be the best thereminist playing today; she's the inventor's last protégée
(as well as being the granddaughter of his cousin) and her range on the instrument is unparalleled. Here, she tackles the
body of work made specifically for the instrument from the likes of Joseph Schillinger, Bohuslav
Martinu, Percy Grainger, Isidor Achron, and a handful of contemporary composers. Percy Grainger's "Free Music No. 1" for four theremins eerily defies the bounds of
written composition (Kavina plays all four theremin roles); Kavina's own Suite is an impressive showpiece of the
instrument's range; and Vladimir Komarov's tape-and-theremin piece "Voice of Theremin" is built entirely of passages from
the instrument and the voice of Theremin himself, all processed through a computer with stunning results. Martinu's Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe,
Piano, and Strings is the disc's pièce de resistance : a
14-minute composition which integrates the etheral voice of the theremin with the wonderful playing of the Portland String
Quartet to stunning effect. For the classical fan who has everything, this disc may be the perfect gift.

The Day
The Earth Stood Still: 20th Century Fox Film Scores - The Classic Series [SOUNDTRACK] Bernard Herrmann, CD released November 9, 1993)
Also available on and

The pinnacle of the use of the theremin in film, this is the Ultimate Sci-Fi movie soundtrack. Recorded in
Multi-Channel Stereo Surround High Fidelity in 1951, it is a recorded masterpiece in Sci-Fi music featuring the classic
Theremin, the first electronic musical instrument of the 1930's, and TRUE Stereo Multichannel Surround Sound with a
magnificent score and excellent musical interest of the highest level. Recording quality is stunning in BOTH its
Stereophonics and in its very High Fidelity, especially for 1951, which was considerably ahead of its time.
Who
didn't love "The Day the Earth Stood Still"? It's old, yet it can still stir you. Part of the reason has to be the
mysterious, haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, who did similar work for Alfred Hitchcock. By mixing uplifting, inspirational
sequences of notes with ominous bass lines he helped reinforce the movie's message about the dangerous path into the future.
It's as though Herrmann is saying, "There's something worth seeing at the end of the trip, but you better watch your step
along the way."
Today, it may seem a bit cliche'd, but Herrman fearlessly embraced the Theremin's musical potential,
producing the weird, liquid, electronic glissandos that have become science fiction cinema's signature music, ever since.
Others may have done it first, but he was the first to do it right. And, as with many soundtracks, you get to hear all of his
work without voice-over or sound effects, which, in this case, is a big reason to buy the CD. There's more in there than
you'll ever hear by watching the movie.

Samuel Hoffman 3 CD Set Easy listening.. the space controlled way...
Buy on Amazon |
Originally released as a series of 78 rpm recordings for Capitol in the late 1940s, this set collects the
work of Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, the leading theremin virtuoso of his age. After adding theremin to a number of successful
films (most notably, Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, and The Day the Earth Stood Still), Hoffman (a podiatrist by profession)
teamed with British composer Harry Revel. The result: three albums that introduced this oddly provocative instrument to the
world. On Music Out of the Moon, the tone is optimistic futurism with Hoffman guiding his instrument through dramatic swoops
across the universe while an enthusiastic chorus oohs and ahhs at the wonder of it all. With tracks like "Lunar Rhapsody",
"Mist O' the Moon," and "Radar Blues", Moon may be the most unintentionally hilarious disc in the set. The second disc,
Perfume Set to Music was, according to the liner notes, inspired by "world famous perfumes." The music, of course, is as
ridiculous as the concept. The chorus remains on Perfume, but the mood is a bit more sedate, stepping away from futuristic
jazz and utilizing more string arrangements. On Music for Peace of Mind, listeners are instructed that "This music has a
message, if you will open your mind and heart to receive it. Turn down the lights, relax in an easy chair, and listen. Then,
for a few stolen hours, perhaps you will warm to happy memories and blissful hopes." Oh, you will, all right, you
will.
